Acting on a tip-off from a Mr and Mrs Pritchard of West London, Cath and I went to see the Folk Archive exhibition at the Barbican Gallery on Saturday. It was fascinating and I don't think I've ever been to an exhibition so diverse or one where I was interested in practically everything on display.
It turns out that "Folk Art" is pretty much anything people do or create without really thinking its art. Plus lots of drawings by people in prison (!). So there was a scarecrow designed to look like Michael Jackson, from a village in Leicestershire, there were customised crash helmets, trade union banners, gurning photos,
anti-4x4 tickets (genius!). All manner of stuff. There were also videos of various local traditions like the Lewes Bonfire night or the Tar Barrels in Ottery St Mary or the extraordinary
Burry Man from South Queensferry.
